Press Release The Crafts Council of Ireland has designated 2011 as Ireland's Year of Craft. To celebrate this event and the very best of Irish craft and design Ceardlann, Spiddal Craft & Design Studios will host Féile na Ceardlainne a free Festival of Art, Craft, Music and Dance from the 26th April – 1st May. Ceardlann is home to nine unique Arts and Craft design studios whose members have programmed a week-long Festival of FREE open day workshops for people to try their hand at craft. Why not try Porcelain Making and get a Feeling for Clay, perhaps some Pottery throwing on a wheel, indulge your inner artist with some Painting and Figure Drawing, be amazed at the art of a traditional Weaver at work on her loom, learn how to create Stained Glass in the old traditional way or design your own Glass jewellery. Learn Irish with Ciabhán Ó Murchú, Star of Ros na Rún, enjoy hours of Kite Making, de-stress with Tai Chi, take a Walking Trail of An Spidéal or design your own Button Badge and Friendship Bracelet. Enjoy an evening at the Open-Air Concert overlooking spectacular Galway Bay and be entertained by local musicians, guitarist and singer Austin Durack, sean-nós dancers including the 'dancing postman', Latin dancing and music from Kurdistan. Dance and skip around a Maypole full of ribbons. To un-wind after your long day visit Builín Blasta serving homemade treats of pastries, chowder, pizzas and stunning desserts, you might even stumble upon some music as you dine. Celebrating 27-years in business and based at the entrance to Spiddal village overlooking breathtaking views of Galway Bay, Clare, The Aran Islands and The Cliffs of Moher, Ceardlann is a treasure trove of handmade creations by each of its design artists providing the Festival workshops. Geraldine O' Rourke is a mixed media artist whose creations have their own unique character and personality and subjects range from Celtic mythology and figurative drawings to aquatic themes. Rob D'eathSliding Rock of is a Potter whose showroom and workshop includes a gallery of Irish contemporary ceramic art, presenting work from other artists in Ireland in addition to his own. Máire Ní Thaidhg weaves all her individually designed scarves, throws, wallhangings and tapestries in her shop with yarns reflecting the vibrant colours of Connemara and the landscape of Galway Bay. Andrea Rossi a Brazilian artist based in Connemara works through the acrylic medium producing colourful figurative work. Her work is very contemporary and explores different aspects of the rich Irish culture. Stained glass artist, Sue Donnellan works with contemporary designs and draws her inspiration from the sea and the native landscape which surrounds her and creates unique and inspiring pieces of glass jewellery, lamps, glass clocks and candle holders. Gearóid Ó Murchú of An Spailpín Fánach provides unique Celtic designs in fashion handbags, t-shirts, casualwear, books, games and all things Gaelic for adults and children. Family run Cloon Keen Atelier is a sanctuary for all the senses that has become famous for their range of over 35 scented hand-poured candles, and quality body, bath and home accessories from Ireland. An Siopa Buí is a delightful ceramic café where adults and children can paint their own pottery and enjoy a wide range of craft activities with the best-stocked card making and scrapbooking shop in Ireland. Celtic Coin Jewellery produces jewellery in silver, copper and brass using the celebrated designs of the first coins of the Irish Free State and incorporates the ancient spiral found in Ireland's Celtic heritage.
